First EU Horizon Workshop at LIR

On March 25, 2026, early-career researchers as well as project and working group leaders gathered at the Leibniz Institute for Resilience Research (LIR) in Mainz for an EU Horizon workshop organized by Dr. Roberta Backhaus. The LIR welcomed Sarah Goharnia, EU Affairs Officer at the Leibniz European Office of the Leibniz Association in Brussels.

To kick off the event, the speaker provided an introduction to the EU’s “Horizon Europe” framework program. In particular, she highlighted the European Research Council (ERC) and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) as key funding lines and explained eligibility requirements as well as provided guidance on preparing and submitting applications.

Another focus of the workshop was on practical tips for networking and finding partners when establishing consortia. In addition, Sarah Goharnia provided information on how researchers can become more actively involved in the European research landscape, for example as reviewers. Finally, participants received an overview of current EU calls for proposals in the fields of health and health partnerships.

The workshop concluded with individual consultations, including feedback on draft proposals or project ideas.
